Palace of the Princes of Transylvania
4 Militari Street, Alba Iulia, Alba County
The residence of the Princes of Transylvania is the place where, for over 150 years (1541-1699), the fate of the entire region was decided. The palace was built in the 15th century, extended and modified between the 16th and 17th centuries, and is considered the most important administrative building in Transylvania. Beneath the thick plaster, the walls hide parts of the walls of the Roman Apulum castle and the medieval fortress, traces of Roman, medieval and pre-modern constructions. It was in turn: a capitulum, a princely residence and, for the last 3 centuries, military barracks (Austrian and Romanian).
From 2024, following the completion of the restoration of the E Building of the Palace, the Palace Museum of the Princes of Transylvania was opened. The building is used for the following purposes: interactive exhibition space, cultural hub, research centre, event space, place of study, relaxation and leisure.
To support the mission of recovering the memory of the place, interactive and sensorial means are used, which take the visitor into the different worlds and eras of the palace, experiencing life in the palace through technology and the arts.
